Mixed Breed dogs or CrossBreeds are usually a mixture of two different purebred dogs with parents of a mixed heritage. For example, Maltepoo (Maltese-Poodle), Afghan Retriever (Afghan Hound/Golden Retriever), Beago (Beagle/Golden Retriever), Chug (Chihuahua/Pug), Dameranian (Dachshund/Pomeranian), Frengle (Beagle/French Bulldog), Goldmation (Golden Retriever/Dalmatian), etc, are all mixed breeds.
The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to do a good amount of research on each of the individual purebreds in the cross.
The chances of getting perfect puppies are very low; however, the cross may produce healthy, cute puppies with some of the desirable traits. Since the genes cannot be identified and sorted by hand to create these puppies, many of their traits will not be known until they are adults and may not be fully known if they are never bred.
If you do not feel that the temperament of one of the purebreds in the mix is suited for your lifestyle, then a ‘mix’ is not for you. Do not take a gamble that the puppy or dog will turn out like the other breed in the mix.
Dogs belonging to the mixture of breeds like retrievers, setters or pointers tend to be quite compatible as family pets. Whereas, mixture of dogs belonging to the working dog group and herding breed group tend to be sturdy and have a self-sufficient streak in them.
Even though, most Terrier or Toy Breed mixes are found to be headstrong, noisy, hyper-active, restless and excitable, they are also lively pets with high energy level. Nipping is quite common among Terrier mixes so training is important from an early stage.
Many a times it has been seen that mixture of German Shepherd, Akita, Dalmatian with Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Collie have shown strange results. Temperament wise some dogs turned out to be overly shy while some became extremely aggressive. Although these dogs as purebreds are immensely popular among household, as mixed breeds they can prove to be quite a handful..
Mongrels or Mutts, on the other hand, that compose three quarter of the dog population are dogs of such a mixture of breeds that they are indeterminable.
