About Maltipoo

Country of Origin, History of Maltipoos

There is no known date or person who started the Malitpoo breed, but it is believed it may have existed naturally over the years. However, it was only in the 1980s that designer dog breeders in North America mixed Maltese and Poodle to develop Maltipoos to have an intelligent, affectionate, companion dog. As demand for mixed breed dogs kept increasing, Maltipoos became more and more popular.

A General Appearance of the Dog

The Maltipoo is the result of breeding a Maltese with a Poodle. Most breedings involve a Toy Poodle to make a smaller dog, but sometimes a Miniature Poodle is used and the resulting Maltipoo is larger. Their appearance can be closer to that of a Poodle with a curly coat or closer to the Maltese with a wavy, silky coat. To better understand the traits of your dog, research both breeds involved. These dogs have a well-proportioned body with a muscular and athletic build.

These fun-loving dogs fit many different households from singles in apartments to families with a fenced yard. Maltipoos don’t shed, are hypoallergenic, and are easily trained. They are affectionate and cuddly, but energetic and inquisitive. While they love to play and enjoy games that involve their intelligence, they are also content to sit with you to watch TV.

The coat of the Maltipoo can be curly like the Poodle or wavy and silky like the Maltese. Colors can include white, silver, blue, cream, brown, chocolate, apricot, gray, and black or a combination. The Maltipoo does not shed and is hypoallergenic. The Maltipoo coat provides protection in most types of weather, but in cold and snowy weather he may need a coat and will need his feet checked for ice balls after a walk.

Maltipoo Personality Traits

Dog with lovers

Temperament of the Dog

Maltipoos are lively, intelligent, loving, alert, gentle, and energetic. They can play for hours, especially if the owner participates by throwing a toy. They love to train for a competition in obedience or agility. They play with older children, but younger children must be supervised when playing with them because they are a bit fragile. They get along with other family pets if they are introduced and socialized early. They also enjoy sitting with you or in your lap. They will alert you when strangers are around.

Separation anxiety can be an issue, so get the dog used to your being gone while it is young and give it constructive things to do while you are gone.

Better suited to an indoor or outdoor lifestyle?

The Maltipoo needs to live inside your home.

Are they suited to homes with kids?

The Maltipoo loves children, but should not be trusted with children younger than age six without supervision.

Maltipoos are easy to train and love to please their owners. They love obedience training and competitions and thoroughly enjoy rally and agility.

Socialize your Maltipoo when it is young. Start etiquette training early so it knows what you expect. Include commands to quiet barking in your training. Also, train your Maltipoo to stay alone and do constructive things.

Maltipoo Activity Level

How active is the breed?

Maltipoos love to take walks and learn what is going on in the world around them. They enjoy dog parks and training for an obedience or agility competition. However, they can get plenty of exercise in their own fenced back yard, especially if someone plays with them – or in the house playing with their family on a rainy day. To keep them mentally challenged as well as use their physical energy, consider teaching them tricks and playing games with them. This is a breed that personifies “a tired dog is a good dog” so should have several periods of exercise a day to work off its energy in good ways so it is not destructive.

The Maltipoo requires brushing at least 2 -3 times a week. At the same time, check or clean the ears and see if nails and fur on the feet needs to be trimmed. Wiping around the eyes or the use of a product such as Angel Tears may be necessary, especially with lighter colored dogs. Keep fur clipped away from eyes and also on feet and hind quarters. The teeth should be brushed at least three times a week. Bathing will be needed about once a month. Some people take their Maltipoo to a professional groomer every 8 weeks.

Health and Care

A problem to be aware of is the collapsed trachea. Separation anxiety can be an issue since Maltipoos love being with their owners so much. Other issues which can affect the Maltipoo are the white shaker syndrome, epilepsy, patellar luxation (knee issues), arthritis, portosystemic shunt (abnormal flow of blood between the liver and the body), progressive retinal atrophy (leads to blindness), and Legg-Perthes Disease of the rear leg. You may want to research these situations before getting a Maltipoo so you can quickly work with your vet to develop a treatment plan if your Maltipoo develops signs of any of them.
