About Chipoo

Country of Origin, History of Chipoos

There is no known date or person who started the ChiPoo breed, but it is believed it may have existed naturally over the years. However, it was only in the 1970s that designer dog breeders in the United States mixed Chihuahua and Poodles to develop ChiPoo dogs to have a small, low-maintenance, energetic, and intelligent dog. As demand for mixed breed dogs kept increasing, ChiPoos became more and more popular.

A General Appearance of the Dog

The Chipoo is a combination of the Chihuahua breed and the Toy or Teacup or Miniature Poodle. To learn more about this breed, look up characteristics of both breeds as some will look more like a Chihuahua while others will look more like a Poodle and the same is true of how they act.

The little Chipoo can have floppy or pointed upright ears and a coat that is either wavy or curly or even more smooth and short like the Chihuahua. Its head can resemble the Poodle’s or the Chihuahua’s.

The smart, alert, eager Chipoo is a fun-loving dog who will thrive in an apartment as well as a small or large home with or without a yard. He loves an active life to use his intelligence and energy. However, he does not need a lot of exercise since playing with toys and being with his humans will give him activity. He will alert his owner to potential dangers and visitors with his barking.

Chipoos come in cream, brown, blue, brindle, silver, grey, fawn, white, and black or any combination of two or three of those colors. The coat can be short and coarse like a Chihuahua or longer and curlier like a Poodle. Some have very fuzzy coats that are a combination of traits. They can even have coats of varying lengths and types on different parts of their bodies. A weekly brushing is good for keeping the coat clean, but some will need more frequent brushing during spring and fall shedding season.

Be aware that Chipoos do not tolerate extreme cold or hot weather. They will need a sweater for cold days and if they go outdoors in hot, sunny weather, they will need sunscreen on ears, nose, and other sensitive areas.

Chipoo Personality Traits

Dog with lovers

The Spanish Water Dog is an extremely intelligent, fearless, ever-active, strong, attentive, happy and well balanced versatile working dog with strong herding, hunting and guardian instincts. It is a devoted companion. It is reserved, not shy, with strangers. They can be protective and territorial.

Are they suited to families with kids?

Most of them are good with children and other animals if properly socialized.

Start housetraining at 8 weeks and be consistent or they may be difficult to fully housebreak. Chipoos are intelligent and pick up commands easily, but may ignore commands if they don’t want to do them even when they know the commands. Training and socialization should be started early and continued during the Chipoo’s life.

Introduce other animals slowly and calmly. If the Chihuahua characteristics are dominant, they will want to be “in charge” of a multiple dog household.

Chipoo Activity Level

How active is the breed?

Short walks in good weather and indoor play are sufficient for the Chipoo. They are usually very playful with toys. They also love to go with their people and be involved in the daily routine.

Be sure to groom them weekly, checking their ears (especially if they are hanging ears). They need toenail clipping once a month. Tear stains ae a major problem, especially for white or light-colored dogs. The use of Angel Eyes or a similar product can be a big help with the stains, but keeping a cloth handy to wipe the dog’s eyes frequently is also helpful. Oral health is of great concern for small dogs, so be sure to brush your dog’s teeth several times a week. Some will need a visit to a professional groomer every 6 weeks.

Health and Care

While the SWD seems to be a very healthy breed there are some issues that the SWD have, just like all other breeds. There are cases of Hip Dysplasia in the breed, so choose your breeder carefully.

All breeding dogs should have their hips tested, either by OFA or PennHIP. There have been a few cases of PRA reported in Europe so it is advised that all breeders should test their breeding stock for PRA and other such genetic eye diseases with a yearly CERF exam. A responsible breeder will be able to produce the results in writing.

Like other Water Dogs and related breeds, they grow hair in their ear canals and can be prone to ear infections. The ears must be kept dry and clean. . Because these dogs are (as a general rule) so active and energetic as puppies, they may seriously injure themselves from too much running and jumping when their skeletal structure is still developing.
