Popular Family Dog Breeds

In reality any dog breed, whether purebred or mixed breed, can be a potentially wonderful family dog. There are some breeds or dog types that have definitely become very popular family dogs due to their outstanding temperaments and ability to love and interact with all members of the family. Typically family dogs tend to be medium to large breeds, only because the small and toy dogs may not be suitable for families with very small children. The most popular family dog breeds have several characteristics that are common, however each is also a unique animal with individual traits and their own personality. Choosing a purebred dog allows you to more closely predict what these temperaments will be, but a mixed breed dog or a rescue dog from a shelter is also an excellent choice. Labrador Retrievers

The Lab is the most popular dog in the United States according to the American Kennel Club. The Lab is a highly energetic and very kid friendly breed. They are both intelligent as well as playful and they make terrific companion pets for households with other dogs and non-canine pets. The Lab does best in a house with a big, fenced yard and lots of people in and around the house all the time. They can be an outdoor dog but really prefer to be inside with the family. Golden Retrievers

The Golden Retriever is one of the calmer breeds of dogs, loving and loyal without being aggressive or territorial. They are very patient and kind towards children and seem to enjoy being involved in everything the kids do. The Golden Retriever does require regular grooming and will be a heavy shedder during the spring and autumn. Beagles

The Beagle is a friendly, loving and active dog that also has a laid back and calm side to their personality. The Beagle loves to be the center of attention however they also will curl up at your feet and just relax. The Beagle will have the typical baying type bark that is both distinctive and part of the charm of the breed. Cocker Spaniels

The Cocker Spaniel is one of the smaller popular family breeds but they have all the good temperament and friendly personality traits of the larger breeds. Although more popular in specific areas than others, the Bulldog is actually a terrific family dog.
