Country of Origin, History of Weimaraners
Weimaraners originally came from the court of Weimar in Germany where there was a breeding program to create a dog with the best hunting dog characteristics for large game such as deer, wolves and wildcats. Over time, as large game became scarce in the area, the breed was refined as a small game pointer. The breed was originally tightly controlled by the German breed club which forced anyone wanting a Weim to become a member and sign a contract to protect the breed.

Temperament of the Dog
Weimaraners are loyal and devoted to their family. They want to be part of the family and do not do well if left alone for long periods of time. Weims are happy, loving and rambunctious. Highly intelligent, Weims can also be opinionated and willful, so they need a firm, experienced trainer from the start.
Weimaraners are known to be reserved with strangers and often aggressive towards other dogs. They are very protective of their family and home territory. Bred as a hunting dog for birds and small furry animals, Weimaraners do not do well with cats, birds, rodents or small dogs.
Better suited to an indoor or outdoor lifestyle?
Weimaraners are not suited to living outdoors, and need to live inside and be included as part of the family. They are a very active dog and need lots of exercise and will do best with a large fenced yard.
Are they suited to homes with kids?
Weimaraners may tolerate children but are not recommended for young children because of their energetic attitude on life. Young children or older adults could be accidentally knocked down.
How Active is the Breed?
Weims are an active hunting breed. They have great stamina, and need to be taken for a long walk or jog daily. They also need lots of opportunity to run free and will do best with a large yard with a tall, secure fence.
How Much Exercise Does the Dog Need at every stage of its Life?
Weimaraners are a very active breed, needing daily walks / jogs and time to run free.
Short haired Weimaraners are easy to keep in peak condition with an occasional brushing. Dogs should have their mouth and feet inspected after working or exercise.
Weimaraners can sometimes be very uncomfortable with handling of their feet and will need their nails trimmed on a regular basis. Make sure that you handle their feet often as a young pup to get them comfortable with this process.
