About Pomchi

Country of Origin, History of Pomchis

There is no known date or person who started the Pomchi or Chiranian breed, breed, but it is believed it may have existed naturally over the years. However, it was only in the 1990s that designer dog breeders in North America mixed Pomeranian and Chihuahua to develop Pomchis to have an intelligent, affectionate, companion dog. As demand for mixed breed dogs kept increasing, Cockapoos became more and more popular.

In the 1990s a club was a formed in the United States and a standard was adopted in 1998.

A General Appearance of the Dog

The Pomchi is a cross of the Pomeranian and Chihuahua. There is a standard for the breed established by the Pomchi Club of America, but there are still people breeding first-time crosses and there are dogs in various stages of the developmental crossing, so not all dogs look or act like the standard, but may look or act in some situations more like a Pomeranian or a Chihuahua.

Breed standard for appearance: The Pomchi is a graceful, short coupled little dog with sweet expression, alert and intelligent in attitude. The body is short-coupled with females allowed to be somewhat longer than males. Head is a rounded wedge. Moderately short muzzle is slightly pointed. Cheeks and jaws lean. Eyes are round, not protruding, set neither too wide nor too close together. Dark pigment around eyes except self-coloring allowed in brown, blue or light-colored dogs. Eyes are dark except lighter coloring allowed in dilutes. Medium size, erect type ears, are held upright when alert but may be carried rose back in repose. The tail is moderately long, carried flat or in a loop over the back, with tip just touching the back, never tucked between legs.

What you will find is that many do not match the breed description because they are ¾ Chihuahua, so may have more traits from that breed.

The Pomchi is a cute, small, intelligent, attention-loving dog that does best in an apartment or small home with one to three adult or older teen family members. They do not do well with long exposure to very cold or very warm temperatures. The Pomchi usually bonds especially closely to one family member, so they enjoy having a single owner, but can get along with others. They can be yappy, so you must start training early to curb unwanted barking.

The Pomchi or Chiranian is prone to small dog syndrome, where they try to rule the household through their demands and assertiveness. Therefore, they need firm rules and a good pack leader who uses positive reinforcement.

The Pomchi may be double or single coated. The outer coat should be full, of soft texture and glossy with long, coarse guardhairs. The coat placed well over body with ruff on neck preferred, and scantier on head and ears. Hair on tail should be profuse and furry. An undercoat permitted. There may be feathering on legs and ears. Any color including solid, parti, merle, sable are equally acceptable. (The main colors are sable and brown, but they can be blue and tan, black and tan, or even cream.)

Because most have a long coat and shed, they do not make a good dog for allergy sufferers.

Pomchi Personality Traits

Dog with lovers

Temperament of the Dog

The Pomchi or Chiranian insists on being the center of attention. They have a lot of energy, but enjoy cuddling with their favorite human. They will usually stick to that person very closely, but they get along with (tolerate) other family members, so they are recommended for a single person or couple home. They may develop separation anxiety (barking or being destructive) if left for long periods.

They are inquisitive and happy, loving to be with you indoors and outdoors. They travel well. They demand and expect respect and may snap or bite if their food is interfered with or someone messes with their tail or ears. They will play and entertain you for hours.

The Pomchi is assertive and insistent on its own way, so must have an owner capable of being an alpha leader and working consistently with the dog, using positive reinforcement and fun ways of training.

Better suited to an indoor or outdoor lifestyle?

The Pomchi is an indoor dog who will probably not go outdoors by himself, but is happy to go out with you.

Are they suited to homes with kids?

The Pomchi is not a dog you want to have around kids. They are snappy and possessive of food and toys. They will be jealous of the attention given to kids and will not respond well to kids giving commands. If you have grandchildren who come over, be sure to socialize the Pomchi a lot with children as a puppy and always supervise interactions between the dog the kids.

It is critical to socialize your Pomchi (Chiranian) early and consistently so it does not become fearful and aggressive around strangers and other animals. Be careful to train them when to bark and when not to bark so they do not become yappy.
