About Peekapoo

Country of Origin, History of Peekapoos

There is no known date or person who started the Peekapoo breed, but it is believed it may have existed naturally over the years. However, it was only in the 1950s that designer dog breeders in North America mixed Pekingese and Poodle to develop Peekapoos to have a low or non-shedding, hypoallergenic, companion dog. As demand for mixed breed dogs kept increasing, Peekapoos became more and more popular from the 1960s.

A General Appearance of the Dog

The Peekapoo is a cross between a Pekingese and a Poodle – either a Toy or a Miniature. Those from the Toy Poodle are smaller than those from the Miniature Poodle. The looks and temperament vary from dog to dog depending on where the traits are from. For example, a litter of puppies may have two that look more like Poodles and one that looks more like a Pekingese, but their behavior may not match their looks!

The Peekapoo is a devoted, affectionate breed. They have great energy and desire to play and interact with their family. They will be happy in a family or with an individual, in a home with a fenced yard or in an apartment. They do enjoy walks and playtimes both indoors and outdoors. Separation anxiety can be a problem.

This intelligent dog likes to be challenged mentally, so will enjoy obedience and agility and be good at rally. He wants to be a constant companion, and loves being a lapdog. He tends to be protective of his belongings and family.

Coat

The Peekapoo can have a long, wavy coat more like a Pekingese which is less hypoallergenic or a curly, hypoallergenic coat like a Poodle. The desired coat is a combination that is low-shedding and easy to care for without professional grooming. Coat colors can be silver, gray, white, black, sable, red, cream, apricot, chocolate, or buff or a combination with a variety of markings.

Peekapoo Personality Traits

Dog with lovers

Temperament of the Dog

The Peekapoo is a dedicated, loving little dog who is cute and playful. He enjoys being the “baby” of an individual (young or elderly) or a family. He wants to be with a person as much as possible, accompanying you wherever you go or sitting with you while you watch TV. He will play as long as you will interact or the toy will squeak. He loves exploring the outdoors on his leash or in his fenced yard. He is enthusiastic in joining into activities, but can be trained to spend time by himself if started young. He tends to be protective of his belongings and family.

Better suited to an indoor or outdoor lifestyle?

The Peekapoo is a lively dog who loves to live in your house with you. He will like to sit in your lap and sleep in your bed. He also likes to take walks and rides.

Are they suited to homes with kids?

Yes

Training

Peekapoos are fairly easy to train using positive reinforcement. They like to please and learn quickly. Be sure to also train them to quit barking on command and make sure they know etiquette expectations.

Peekapoo Activity Level

How active is the breed?

The Peekapoo needs daily exercise, but he will make sure he gets it through playtimes if you don't have time to take him for his favorite walk. Even if you live in an apartment, he will enjoy outdoor exercise. The Peekapoo loves to take walks and likes playtimes both indoors and outdoors. It should not be exercised to the point of respiratory distress. They can suffer from heat exhaustion, so a home with air conditioning in hot or humid weather is important.

Grooming

Depending on the type of coat the dog inherited, you may want to have it professionally clipped periodically. For most, a brushing a couple of times a week and a monthly bath will suffice. Be sure to clip toenails once or twice a month, brush teeth at least three times a week, and check ears for debris when brushing. If the dog inherited the Pekingese folds around the mouth, nose, and eyes, it is important to keep them clean and free of debris – also wipe around the eyes frequently.
