About Mudi

The Mudi originated in Hungary and is not yet well known outside its native country. The Hungarian herdsman's dogs were all classified together until the 1930's when the Mudi was separated from the Puli and Pumi, as a result of spontaneous breeding.

A General Description of the Breed
The Mudi has a wedge-shaped head with a pointed nose. The jaws are muscular with a scissors bite. The skull is convex with a well-marked stop. The eyes are oval and dark brown. The ears are erect in the shape of an upside-down "V". It has a deep thorax. It is not unusual for the puppies to be born without a tail. The back is straight and rather long. The hind legs are surprisingly wide set. The paes and limbs are naturally smooth. The hair on the muzzle is short, becoming bristly toward the ears. Its dense, wavy to curly coat is about 2 inches (5 cm.) long with glossy hair that forms tufts.
Coat
Coat colors include black, white, red, brown, gray, bread-pale, and fallow. There is also a very rare color called "cifra" (blue-merle) which is dark or light gray and mixed with a black, spotted, striped, stained, marbly color. The potential coat colors are actually limitless with this breed.
Height: 15 to 19 inches (38 to 47 cm) high at the withers.
Weight: 18 to 29 pounds (8 to 13 kg)

Temperament
The Spanish Water Dog is an extremely intelligent, fearless, ever-active, strong, attentive, happy and well balanced versatile working dog with strong herding, hunting and guardian instincts. It is a devoted companion. It is reserved, not shy, with strangers. They can be protective and territorial.
Are they suited to families with kids?
Most of them are good with children and other animals if properly socialized.
Training
They are very easy to train. However, being strong-willed and independent, the Mudi needs firm and consistent training from an early age.

How active is the breed?
The Mudi is a very active breed. They need to be taken on a daily, long, brisk walk or jog to keep them in good health and spirit. In addition, they will benefit from a large safe area where they can run free. They love to play and will excel in all kinds of sports such as flyball and Frisbee.
Grooming
If meant to be a working dog, the coat should be sheared, never combed or brushed, but bathed only when necessary using a mild shampoo without heavy conditioners. If the coat becomes excessively matted, the cords can be separated by pulling the mats apart with the fingers down to the skin.
For show dogs, the coat should be sheared down at least once a year (or more). Once or twice a week one should look behind the ears, and the area where he sits and separate any cords that might bind together. Its nails should be clipped and eyes cleaned as often as necessary. Consistent minimal work is needed to help develop the proper cording.
The Spanish Water Dog does not shed its coat. If there are concerns about allergies, it is recommended that one spend time with the Spanish Water Dog to see if they are indeed allergic.

Health and Care
The Mudi is a very healthy breed with no hereditary diseases documented so far. There have been only a few reports of hip dysplasia and skin allergies.
