About Labradoodle

Country of Origin, History of Labradoodles

Wally Conron, who worked at the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia, crossed a Labrador Retriever and Poodle in 1989 to create a Labradoodle as a guide dog for a blind lady whose husband was allergic to dog hair. He said it is his life’s biggest regret since it sparked the crossbreeding frenzy that has resulted in Shih-poos, Puggles, and more. Of the three puppies of that first mating, only one proved to by hypoallergenic. Later Mr. Conron declared,” I’ve created a monster.” Ruthless, unethical breeders have gone wild with Labradoodles and many other “poos” and “doodles” (crosses with Poodles) and declared all of them hypoallergenic which is not true. There are two distinct types of Labradoodles: the American Labradoodle which is a hybrid or cross-breed dog and the Australian Labradoodle which has become purebred.

A General Appearance of the Dog

A first generation Poodle and Labrador Retriever cross is very unpredictable in terms of coat and personality, so cannot be trusted to be hypoallergenic. To get a more “Labradoodle look” (curly shaggy) and hypoallergenicity, the dog must be 75% Poodle, an F1 generation Labradoodle mated with a Poodle. This F2 generation is generally very healthy.

Labradoodles will enjoy and benefit from obedience training and socialization. Start teaching them good etiquette (like not jumping on people) early and reinforce it often in positive ways (praise, playtime, or treats). They will also love activities that use their exuberant energy and intelligence like puzzle toys, agility training, rally training, and flyball as well as walks, runs, and hikes. These dogs need at least an hour of good exercise each day.

Labradoodles were bred as guide and service dogs, so their use in all types of service is no surprise. They are smart, loving, and loyal and love to learn new things, solve problems, and be helpful. With a little help in housetraining and basic training, they will serve a disabled person well.

Coat

The Labradoodle coat is usually wavy to curly, giving a fuzzy look. It can be four to six inches long. Colors include gold, apricot, caramel, chalk, black, red, café, cream, silver, chocolate, parchment, and blue. They can also have a parti coat, including brindles, phantom, patched, or sable.

Weight:

Females will be 45 – 60 pounds and males will be 55 – 65 pounds.

Height:

21 – 24 inches

Litter Size:

3 – 6 puppies

Labradoodle Personality Traits

Dog with lovers

Temperament of the Dog

The Labradoodle is an exuberant, loving dog. He enjoys being with his people (or any people), socializing and playing. He is an intelligent problem solver. They can be taught not to jump on people or counter cruise. Most are gentle and easy-going and adapt to various situations so travel well.

Labradoodles are affectionate and playful. They prefer older children who can handle their high energy levels. They love everyone and never meet a stranger. They get along well with other dogs and love going to the dog park to play. They should have a large fenced yard for playtimes throughout the day or evening to work off their energy.

They are a good dog for a first-time dog owner, but do not handle apartment living well since they need lots of exercise. Be wise in choosing a puppy from a litter and choose one that is neither beating up its littermates nor hiding in the corner.

Better suited to an indoor or outdoor lifestyle?

Even though Labradoodles are suited to being outdoor dogs, they prefer being indoors with their people. However, they love having a large, fenced yard to run and play or going to a dog park or going on runs or hikes.

Are they suited to homes with kids?

Labradoodles are great with kids, but they are too overpowering in their strength and energy for young children. If you get one as a puppy and it grows up with young kids, and is taught not to jump on them, it will be great.

Training

Labradoodles will enjoy and benefit from obedience training and socialization. Start teaching them good etiquette (like not jumping on people) early and reinforce it often in positive ways (praise, playtime, or treats). They make great therapy and service dogs, but also enjoy activities like agility and flyball.

Labradoodle Activity Level

How active is the breed?

They love activities that use their exuberant energy and intelligence like puzzle toys, agility training, rally training, and fly ball as well as walks, runs, and hikes. These dogs need at least an hour of good exercise each day.

Grooming

Labradoodles need to be groomed professionally about every 6 weeks. The groomer should cut their nails and check their ears for debris or infection. Labradoodles will need to be brushed once or twice a week, during which time you should check their ears. They may need a bath and/or a nail trim once or twice between groomer visits. Don’t forget to brush their teeth at least three times a week.
