About Chiweenie

Country of Origin, History of Chiweenies

There is no known date or person who started the Chiweenie breed, but it is believed it may have existed naturally over the years. However, it was only in the 1990s that designer dog breeders in the United States crossed Chihuahua and Dachshunds to develop Chiweenie dogs to minimize the back issues of Dachshunds. As demand for mixed breed dogs kept increasing, Chiweenies became more and more popular.

A General Appearance of the Dog

The Chiweenie is a combination of Chihuahua and Dachshund breeds. Which traits come from which breed will vary from one dog to another. While it may appear closer to one breed, it may behave more like the other breed. Look up both breeds to get a better idea of what to expect.

A distinguishing characteristic of Chiweenies is that most have the Chihuahua’s large, pointed ears which they can control to be up, out, back, or down. Their ears can be as big as their bodies! Most have the long body and short legs of the Dachshund.

Chiweenies can be good dogs for apartment dwellers who are able to take them for frequent, short walks. They tend to be yappy, so must be taught to be quiet on command. They are loving and loyal, but prefer a household with one or two adults rather than a family with children. They do not tolerate cold or hot weather, so need very short times outdoors in extreme weather. In cold weather they need a coat or sweater and in hot and sunny weather they need sunscreen on their noses, ears, and other exposed or light-colored areas.

Coat

Many Chiweenies have a short coat which is easy to groom weekly, but if a parent was a long-haired Chihuahua or Dachshund, they may have long hair. The short-haired Chiweenies are fairly hypoallergenic. The coat can be brown, red, black, white, or a combination.

Chiweenie Personality Traits

Dog with lovers

Temperament of the Dog

The high energy level of the Chiweenie causes them to be called “spunky” and easily excitable. These lap dogs really like to play. They are demanding of attention. They may tend toward excessive barking if not trained early.

Chiweenies will bond closely with one adult. They get along with other family members, but their tight loyalty is to one family member. They can be difficult to housetrain and resistant to various types of training so they take a firm and consistent person to handle them.

Hunting instincts are very prominent, so it is important to keep them on a leash when they are outside of a fenced area. They bark, but they are not at all aggressive or shown any sign of aggressive behavior. Yappiness must be curbed.

Chiweenies love attention and get very excited when getting attention. They can learn a variety of commands and tricks, but will obey on their own schedule if you are not consistent in training and give firm commands followed by consequences or positive reinforcements.

Better suited to an indoor or outdoor lifestyle?

Chiweenies are an indoor dog who likes to go for outdoor walks in nice weather.

Are they suited to homes with kids?

Chiweenies do best in homes with one or two adults and no children, but they can be trained to get along with older children and other pets.

Training

Housetraining will be difficult with most Chiweenies. Put them on a set schedule and be consistent and persistent. They may be hard to train because they are stubborn; however, they are very smart and with patience, persistence, and treats, they learn rules just fine.

Chiweenie Activity Level

How active is the breed?

Chiweenies are very playful. They need several short walks a day and lots of potty breaks.

Grooming

The ears of the Chiweenies need to be checked daily. Nails need to be trimmed or filed quite often because they are indoor dogs and long nails can damage the shape of their legs. Try to brush their teeth daily.

Health and Care

Chiweenies suffer back issues if they are overweight or jump and twist their backs. Like their Dachshund relatives, they suffer degenerative disc disease. Like their Chihuahua relatives, the are prone to hypoglycaemia and diabetes. As with many small dogs, dental disease is an issue, so teeth brushing several times a week is important. Because of their long, low body style, their knees and joints are at risk. They often suffer from allergies, which can show up as skin issues, licking or chewing, coughing, difficulty breathing, or rashes.

Chiweenies are prone to weight gain, so should be on a set diet with few deviations and limited treats and should get regular exercise which will also keep their legs and back strong.

Life Span: 12 – 16 years
