About Aussie Doodle
Country of Origin, History of Aussie Doodles
There is no known date or person who started the Aussie Doodle breed, but it is believed it may have existed naturally over the years. However, it was only in the 1990s that designer dog breeders in North America mixed Australian Shepherd and Poodle to develop Aussie Doodles to have an intelligent, affectionate, companion dog. As demand for mixed breed dogs kept increasing, Aussie Doodles became more and more popular.

A General Appearance of the Dog
Both the Australian Shepherd and the Poodle are very smart breeds, so typically the puppies born of a cross are very smart. They are great family dogs and good therapy dogs.
They need considerable attention, lots of exercise, and jobs to do. The tolerate both heat and cold, but do not like being alone for long periods of time and will create things to do.
Coat
Coats of AussieDoodles will vary considerably depending on the coloring of the parent dogs and which coat characteristics were inherited. A coat that is shorter and curlier like a poodle may be less allergenic than a coat that is double and longer like the Australian Shepherd. The colors of AusieDoodle coats may resemble those of the Australian Shepherd more than the Poodles – blue merle, red merle, black and red tri, black and tan tri, sable and white, parti, or even a solid color like a poodle.
Weight:
Can vary from 10 (Toys) to 60 (Standards) pounds depending on the size of the parents.
Height:
Toy AussieDoodles may be in the 8-12 inch height range.
Mini-AussieDoodles will be in the 10-14 inch height range.
Standard AussieDoodles may be 12-18 inches in height.

Aussie Doodle Personality Traits
Temperament of the Dog
Aussie Doodles are very playful, happy dogs. They love to have something to do or someone to play with. They are loving. They have lots of energy and stamina. They may try to herd members of their families or other pets. They require lots of mental stimulation or will become bored and may find destructive things to do. They should be well socialized so they do not become too tightly bonded with one person or afraid of going places (which they normally love).
Better suited to an indoor or outdoor lifestyle?
Aussie Doodles enjoy walks and outdoor exercise, but tend to want to be indoors with their families. They will need a fenced yard where they can spend time watching the neighbourhood, especially if their family is outdoors playing or gardening. Most can be trained to stay within boundaries without a fence.
Are they suited to homes with kids?
Aussie Doodles bond tightly with their family (which becomes their herd) and want to be included in all activities. They love children if they grow up around children, but can be stand-offish with children if not raised with them.
Training
This is a very easy to train breed. They want to learn new things and they want to please their owners. Start training them early and keep reviewing and adding to their training.

Aussie Doodle Activity Level
They have a very high energy level. As they get to adulthood, you will notice they also have a lot of stamina. They will be very playful and enjoy games and activities that include their intelligence. Consider doing agility or other activities with your dog.
Grooming
AussieDoodles with a coat more like that of a Poodle (wavy or curly and not double-coated) will need a regular trim you may be able to do yourself or can be done by a groomer. These dogs will not shed, but their hair continues to grow.
AussieDoodles with a double coat will shed the undercoat in spring and fall and will have to be brushed daily during 2-3 weeks in each of those seasons.
All AussieDoodles will need their ears checked at least weekly, teeth cleaned daily if possible (at least two to three times a week), and nails cut monthly.
Shedding
This depends on the type of coat they inherited. If their coat is more like a Poodle, they will shed less, but if it is more like an Australian Shepherd, they will shed heavily for 2-3 weeks in spring and fall.

Health and Care
They are a fairly healthy breed, but can be predisposed to some of the same conditions the Australian Shepherd or Poodle face. These may include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and cataracts. Do not use Ivermectin for flea and tick preventative with this breed. Be aware that these dogs are highly food motivated and will tend to gain weight if not exercised adequately and fed a lower fat diet in correct amounts. Limit extra treats and table scraps, using tiny treats or tiny pieces of cooked meat.

The AussieDoodle is also known as an Aussiepoo. It is a cross breeding of Australian Shepherd or Miniature Australian Shepherd and a Standard or Miniature or Toy Poodle. If either parent or grandparent was a Miniature, the puppy will be smaller and may be called a MiniAussiedoodle or MiniAussipoo or Mini-Assie-Poo. Toy Aussie-Doodles are the result of a parent being a Toy Poodle.
Because this is not a purebred dog, it will have some characteristics of the Australian Shepherd and some characteristics of the Poodle. Note also that the Miniatures of each of those breeds may vary from the Standard sized dogs of the breeds. There is no guarantee of which characteristics will be inherited from which breed, so the puppies within a litter can vary considerably in how they look, how much grooming they need, and how they act and respond to training.
