About Pudelpointer

Country of Origin, History of Pudelpointers

They are a pointing breed that came from a cross between the German hunting poodle (pudel) and the English Pointer. In 1881, a German breeder, Baron von Zedlitz, produced the Pudelpointer from seven different poodles and nearly hundred different pointers.

Pudelpointer Personality Traits

Dog with lovers

Temperament of the Dog

By nature the dog is friendly, inquisitive and eager to please, with a dash that makes it a pleasure to work with in the field and a co-operative attitude that also makes it a pleasure in the home. They have a saint-like devotion towards their masters and make excellent playmates for children. They exhibit great purpose, desire and a fiery intensity in the search and handling of wild game. Pudelpointers, as a rule, are excellent water dogs.

Living Conditions

The Pudelpointer is suited to apartment life only if it is provided with high exercise. They do best with families which indulge in a lot of outdoor activities. They are moderately active indoors.

Pudelpointer Activity Level

How active is the breed?

This dog is extremely energetic and tireless. It is very important that it gets daily vigorous exercise to prevent extreme indoor restlessness. They need to be taken on a daily, brisk long walk or jog or made to run alongside while the owner bicycles. They love to swim and retrieve. Lack of adequate exercise may lead to arrogant and destructive behavior. They are very intelligent and easy to train.

Grooming

If meant to be a working dog, the coat should be sheared, never combed or brushed, but bathed only when necessary using a mild shampoo without heavy conditioners. If the coat becomes excessively matted, the cords can be separated by pulling the mats apart with the fingers down to the skin.

For show dogs, the coat should be sheared down at least once a year (or more). Once or twice a week one should look behind the ears, and the area where he sits and separate any cords that might bind together. Its nails should be clipped and eyes cleaned as often as necessary. Consistent minimal work is needed to help develop the proper cording.

The Spanish Water Dog does not shed its coat. If there are concerns about allergies, it is recommended that one spend time with the Spanish Water Dog to see if they are indeed allergic.
