Redbone Coonhound Personality Traits

Dog with lovers

Temperament of the Breed

The Redbone Coonhound is happy, surprisingly affectionate, kind, even-tempered and very good with children. It has a loud, pleasant-sounding bark and unyielding stamina. It loves being with its people and has a strong desire to please its master. They are hotter-nosed, able to locate, alert, agile and quick with a natural instinct for hunting, trailing and treeing. When used on game, Redbones often hunt in packs. Redbones are known to make excellent water dogs.

Suitable for apartment living?

The Redbone Coonhounds will do okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. They are relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least a large yard. Their all-weather coat allows them to live and sleep outdoors and work in all kinds of terrain.

Redbone Coonhound Activity Level

How active is the breed?

This breed demands vigorous exercise and needs to be taken out on long daily walks. They take a longer time to train than some other breeds, because they mature more slowly both physically and mentally. It is not difficult to train the breed to follow scent and tree a quarry. As with all hounds, this breed should be watched closely off leash since they have a tendency to roam and a reputation for chasing small creatures such as cats. Puppies like to chew on nearly anything, and can be fairly destructive, but a simple month to year of training should stop this.

Grooming

As this breed is a light shedder, an occasional brushing will suffice.
